Scribble, Stencil, & Scrap - Just for Fun

Hi Everyone!  I did have the photo and basics of this project I am sharing today in mind for a DT project due next month, however I haven't been crafting much of late so decided to keep this one strictly for fun.

I love creating random and messy backgrounds for my projects be it cards, ATC's, or other items, so I decided that today's background would be for a scrapbook layout and a very rare photo of myself.  Ask my hubby and my friends and they will tell you that I hate my photo being taken so most are spoiled by me pulling faces, or putting my hands up in gestures or simply to block the view of the camera.   This one is no different, and is one of the many 'A' tried snapping of me on my birthday last month, but I thought it might be fun to record this trait which I have apparently inherited from my Mother. Hence there is not that many good photos around of either of us.

My photo I have edited with Picasa using the Comic Book Option and if you look closing you will see the corners have a dotty effect and the outer edges are slightly faded.  I have printed this in black and white.  I love the contrast of bright colors with black and white photos so I have chosen a summery color palette given how hot the past few days here have been.

Because this is a wet and messy method, I am using a piece of A3 Watercolor Paper (the cheap sort) which I have cut down to a square, slightly smaller than a piece of 12 x 12 Cardstock.

I start by spritzing the paper with water.

To add basic color I then take a number of various yellow toned Gelatos and simply scribble over the wet piece of paper.

The scribble is totally random and doesn't have to cover the entire paper.

Taking a wet sponge brush I then blend the color across the page.

Dry with a heat gun.

I love using a variety of stencils to add texture, dimension and interest to my background.  I firstly take my Prima Checker Stencil by Finnabair and using an embossing medium either a embossing pen or ink pad and stencil brush. Color across the stencil so that the ink transfers the square pattern to the page.

I apply the embossing medium and then white embossing powder in sections, heating between each section with my heat gun to activate the embossing powder.

Happy with the amount of embossed squares (which will act as a resist to further color application) I then take my Damask Stencil by Donna Downey and my Flat Fabio Pineapple Paradise Mist from Lindy's Stamp Gang.

I spray two opposite corners with this stencil and then on the opposite corners simply turn my stencil over and blot the excess color which had been previously sprayed on the stencil into my page so you get a negative/positive design across the page.  As mentioned before this is more about creating texture and interest than precision stenciling of the design.

Next I take a handmade stencil (circles punched in a piece of cardstock) and my Lindy's Stamp Gang Mango Mania and spray random circles (some I mist quite heavily, others lighter) across the page.

I then take my Green - Luscious Lime Flat Fabio Mist and spray through a piece of punchinella randomly across the page.

Then to finish my stenciling, my checker stencil is used once more with my Carribean Blue Flat Fabio Mist.

For more interest I grab some stamps.  Today both sets I have chosen are from Unity Stamp Company.

I plan to use the ribbon ends and bracket from the UR All These Things Set and the Stars and Paint Splatters from the Splatters and Stars - All Boy Itty Bitty.

I randomly stamp in black an assortment of the stars and splatters.

With my background done, I move on to finishing my layout.  I choose some papers with similar colors and patterns to the stencils I used.  The green and big orange dot papers are from K & Co while the front orange paper is a scrap of a retired Stampin' Up Design.

I die cut some letters for my title from white cardstock, and coordinate them to my layout by using my Mango Mania Mist to color and some black doodled dashes to define them.

I layer all my finishing elements which include some extra punched and die cut pieces along with a stamped star, ribbon ends and bracket and add my photo.  Because playing with water often makes the page turn and buckle, I apply a generous amount of tape to the page of my watercolor background and layer it on to a contrasting/coordinating piece of card stock.

And there you have it a page capturing the fact that I am camera shy and a fun and messy background technique for a multitude of projects.

Have a great day!

What's On Your Workdesk? Wednesday #227

Hi Everyone, it's been a couple of weeks since I have joined my fellow desker's for the fabulous weekly link up party hosted by the lovely Julia known as 'WOYWW'.  I've been busy with other stuff which pretty much kept me from crafting but now that school has resumed, our other house is sold and and Unruly PaperArts October issue is out, I am enjoying a few quite moments here and there.

Since your last peek at my desk, I have managed to tidy up a bit, still re-organizing as I go, and I finally got the boys onto hanging my peg board to get a few things up off shelves allowing easier access.

Yesterday (Tuesday) I spent some time cutting up some Gelli Prints (I've done heaps) into card size and ATC size backgrounds and had some inky messy fun in my art journal, so it is these items that are currently on my desk.

To the right hand back corner you can see my ATC Backs, whilst all the items I played with for my journal page; Flat Fabio Mists, Gelatos, Handmade Masks, Stamps and Ink litter the rest of my desk space.

The mailman brought some happy mail yesterday too, so also on my desk at present are my return ATC's from a Mixed Media Dragonfly Swap which was hosted by my friend Kitty in the Netherlands over at ATC's for All.

My last photo today is for all you bird lovers out there.  One of the joy's of living out in the country is that we share our home with an abundant amount of birds and wildlife.  Most days we enjoy a morning or afternoon coffee in the company of our feathered friends such as this male king parrot.  This year we have two males and one female that are frequent visitors.  This male usually comes looking for us when there is no seed in the tree feeder and was so hungry today he wouldn't wait for Rod to place the tray down.  He flew in and took it right from Rod's hands.  The males have such a striking red head and chest with green wings and tail, whilst the females are a dull green all over.

Okay that's it from me today, I am off to visit some desks.  Thanks for stopping by and have a great Day!

Sketchabilities #96

Happy Monday Everyone!  Over the past few days I have been playing around with a scrapbook page for the latest challenge over at Sketchabilities.  I don't think I have played along with a scrap sketch challenge for about two years so it is kind of nice to have some starting inspiration and to break out the colors and supplies just for fun.

Since my childhood I have always loved chasing rainbows and I think it is symbolic of what life is all about too - you never know what is possible to achieve unless you try.

This year has definitely been a year for rainbows, probably because we have had frequent rain, and these photos were one of the first double rainbows I have seen and one of the brightest.   We chased this one on our way to pick up Alex from his tutor for about 30 kilometers, all the while hoping the end (and perhaps that pot of gold) was just around the next bend.

The papers are from the Uncharted Waters Paper Collection from Giltz
whilst all my stamping is using various stamps from my Unity KOTM Collections.
My colored background is a mix of my Flat Fabio Mists from Lindy's Stamp Gang and my Gelatos.

It is one of only a few where I have seen the full arch and both ends touching the ground in the surrounding countryside.   Here are two photos from where our journey started showing the full arch.

So put yourself out there I say, embrace possibility and go chase yourself a rainbow!

Unity Friends with Flair 26/7/13

Hi Everyone!  Thanks for all the well wishes last week regarding my back.  I was prescribed stronger pain killers throughout the week and have had some physio and acupuncture.  I am now sitting typing this with my back all taped up for the next few days to stop me from bending and to give me some extra support in the hope that this may help settle things down.  The diagnosis apart from my Spondylitis flaring up is that I have two vertebrae rubbing together when I move.  Anyway thanks to the measures taken this week I have been able to sit for longer than a few minutes and have been in the craft room today playing.

I decided to play with my Flat Fabio Sprays from Lindy's Stamp Gang and my Inktense Pencils both of which give such vibrant color plus I just love the names of my Flat Fabios.  The three I am using today are Pineapple Paradise, Hibiscus Rose and Carribean Blue.

I am linking up both these cards with today's Friday Friends with Flair.

The first card is using off center masking and my Mists (I am using my Lindy's Stamp Gang Flat Fabio's).
I started by using my mask first and spraying with blue.  I then stamped my image slighty off the white space left by my first mask.  I covered over the image and masked moving slightly each time twice more to use my Yellow and Pink Sprays.  As you can tell my Pink Spray is playing up a bit but I kinda liked the blobs.  I then highlighted where my yellow spray outlined the image further with my Yellow Inktense pencil.

The sentiment is made up of some small preprinted wooden words which I brought when I was in Melbourne last month. I am now kicking myself that I didn't buy more.  The butterfly which was already out on my desk is from the Jan 2012 KOTM and I've stamped it using my Black Big Brush Marker Pen.

This week was CHA in the States, so Unity have been having a week long Creative Party to celebrate and as part of this were running a Coloring Contest with which they are giving you a free digital download to use.

Here's my entry.

I have water-colored the image with my Inktense Pencils and used my Yellow Flat Fabio to highlight an area on my embossed background which my sentiment sits over.  Both my image and sentiment were spritzed lightly with the blue and pink.

Here's a bit of a close up so you can see the light spritz.

Be sure to go over to the Unity Facebook Show and Tell Group and check out all the amazing entries using this image, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Anyway I am out of here, hope you all have a great weekend!

Christmas/New Year Art Athon

Hi Everyone!  Back in 2011 I was introduced to the site ATC's For All and in December of that year I played along with my very first Art Athon.  Its basically an anything Goes Art Trading Event.  You make art, you admire and get inspired by the art of others, and trade/swap for any that you really love.

It is on again this year so over the past few days I have managed to find a few minutes here and there to create some art to play along with the hope of trading.  Some of this I have traded already whilst others I have only just created so am waiting to see.

Masking Tape and my New Lindy's Stamp Gang Flat Fabio Mists created the Background which I then highlighted with Black Pen and added the Sentiment, Collage and Die Cut Butterflies.
This ATC I am entering in to a new challenge site I found sometime ago but hadn't had a chance to play along with any of their challenges till now.
Fun with ATC's Challenge - #78 Something New

This year's Christmas/New Year Art-Athon finishes tomorrow at Midnight so I am hoping to find some time to play along some more but don't know if this will eventuate as my sister is due to arrive any minute now for a couple of days and we are taking "A" to see the Hobbit in 3-D at the cinema tomorrow.
